VOLUNTEER TASKS
You can help out by actively participating in our campaigns, designing fliers and brochures to be given out to barangays and posted on veterinary clinics and neighborhood message boards to create awareness on the organization's advocacy.
You can also assist in our clinic or just help clean up the animal areas in the shelter. If you’d like to do animal care, walking the dogs or cleaning the eyes and ears of the cats in the cattery or simply petting them makes a lot of difference in socializing and making them more adoptable.
There are still a lot of ways you can help. Below is a list of tasks that you can do.
Office Assistant – Man the office, process adoption paperwork (including counseling), answer the telephone and assist callers and visitors with general questions/directions. This includes giving a tour of PARC to visitors and guests, informing them on the role of the animal shelter in educating the public and creating awareness on the plight of the animals in the country and what they can do to help.
Admitting – Monitor rescue operations and incoming animals and assist in completing necessary paperwork and animal database including taking photos and data encoding.
Direct Animal Care - Assist approved adopters, walk the dogs and/or puppies, socialize the cats/kittens, clean cages, help with feeding, bathing, medication and basic grooming as needed. (Interested volunteers are required to have pre-exposure anti rabies shots.)
Adoption Team - members of this team do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING to get more "exposure" for shelter animals and tell their stories to increase their chances of getting adopted. Some members are also bloggers who try to utilize the web to spread the word about adoption! You can become part of the team by simply blogging!
Match-Maker - Works side by side with the adoption team, the matchmaker matches animals with adopters who are looking for a particular breed or breed mix, personality traits, specific size, sex or age.
Adoption Follow-up – Monitors adoption cases to see how the animals and their guardians are getting along. The program was developed to assure fewer returned animals. These calls may be made from home or office.
Clinic Technician Assistant - Assist PARC veterinarian in the clinic. This includes preparing medications and assist in spaying and/or neutering of shelter animals. Proper training and close monitoring of the veterinarian is strictly implemented.
Foster Care - Care for shelter animals in your home. These animals are future adoption candidates too young or ill at the time of admission. All medicine and supplies will be provided by PARC. Additional training is required. (Volunteers who foster an animal automatically fulfill the 8 hours of volunteer work required per month.)
Animal Rescue Team - rescues animals in distress
Dog Training and Rehabilitation Team - Works in close coordination with volunteer trainers and senior volunteers/dog handlers with the task of making shelter dogs fit for adoption by socializing them and working on their behavioral problems like aggression, fear or shyness. (Interested volunteers are required to have pre-exposure anti-rabies shots and should undergo special training with our volunteer trainers and dog behaviorists).
Humane Education - Gives presentation at elementary schools regarding issues such as responsible pet ownership, pet handling and safety, pet overpopulation and endangered species.
Campaigns - complements all the major projects of the organization with flyers, posters, celebrity endorsements, organizing protest rallies, etc
Dr. Dog (Pet-Facilitated Therapy) – Together with certified Dr. Dogs, volunteers visit nursing homes, adult day-care centers, hospitals, schools and other establishments. They give patients the feeling that they are the most special people in world. With a loyal new friend who won't judge them for the way they look or their illness, a Dr. Dog accepts them regardless of class, race, age or disability. Despite the advances in medical science, our Dr. Dog partners agree that love is still the best medicine!
Spay-Neuter Team - main goal: raise its own funds to be able to offer free spay-neuter to those who cannot afford even PAWS' low cost spay-neuter rates. (Done in close coordination with Shelter Veterinarian)
Special Events - Represent PAWS in local events where PAWS is actively participating, helps in manning adoption booths and selling paws merchandise.
Disaster Relief - Assist the disaster relief team in the disaster site or at command posts.
Fundraising Events – Help out in organizing events to raise funds for the shelter.
Lobbying and legal work - meeting with government officials, attending hearings, giving legal assistance to those who want to file cases against animal offenders
Reminder: Volunteers must be prepared to render at least eight (8) hours a month doing work at the shelter or outside the shelter for animal welfare to be in our active volunteer database. If one cannot render eight hours of volunteer work a month, please consider being a SUPPORTING MEMBER.

2. Send us YOUR IDEAS/PROPOSED ACTIVITIES
- We also have volunteers located far from the shelter and outside of Metro Manila who do lobbying and all other campaigns for animal welfare in their areas. If you do not live in Manila, please let us know what your ideas are and how you think you can help as a PAWS volunteer in your province. You may email your ideas to [email protected] to coordinate activities/projects.
- For all proposed activities that would like PAWS' participation (collecting donations for the benefit of PAWS, wants PAWS to help organize, etc), please email [email protected] with the details of the project and wait for approval before including the PAWS name and logo in your event poster.
3. Check out your city pound or coordinate with your city vet to see if you can help provide food, water and other necessities
4. If you see a question posted in the PAWS Facebook and you know that the answer is already in the FAQs, please provide the link to the FAQ that answers the poster's concern.
Interested animal lovers (whether in Manila or in the province) who want to do their part to help the animals can also get tips by listening in to a previously recorded segment of Animal Chronicles where Li, a PAWS volunteer who also shares her time to help the Mandaluyong Animal Shelter and other animals, talks about how an "ordinary person" can make a difference (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/16235980 - pls wait until after the President's SONA which took up half the time of Animal Chronicles' program).

We can all make a difference in our own way. :)
I AM FAR FROM QC. IT IS HARD FOR ME TO ATTEND THE ORIENTATION AND/OR TO DO VOLUNTEER WORK AT THE SHELTER. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP? CAN I STILL VOLUNTEER?
Volunteer or not, we urge all concerned citizens to do their proactive part in animal welfare from their personal level whenever and wherever they encounter animal welfare concerns - we encourage everyone to go beyond just merely resorting to posting links or photos/reporting/emailing/calling PAWS.
When more people take the initiative to help an animal in distress, without waiting for or relying on undermanned under-resourced animal welfare groups to address the situation, more animals in need will be helped in this country. PAWS has provided ordinary citizens and pet owners with helpful info through our FAQ which we highly urge you to browse through if you want to volunteer for PAWS - please refer to http://www.paws.org.ph/faqs.html and refer to the left-side bar of this weebly site.
A few examples of how one can be proactive from an ordinary citizen level:

A few examples of how one can be proactive from an ordinary citizen level:
- Start with your own home - BE RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS AND RESCUERS. Have all your pets and rescued animals SPAYED/NEUTERED to prevent them from multiplying and contributing to unwanted pets/strays. Note: Giving away a pet's puppies/kittens to friends and families who will also not bother to have them spayed/neutered is NOT the solution. HELP SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT SPAY/NEUTER. - read RPO / spay/neuter / why are there strays
- STOP BREEDING OR BUYING PETS. ADOPT FROM A SHELTER / ADOPT FROM YOUR CITY POUND / GIVE A STRAY, HOMELESS ANIMAL A HOME - Convince friends and family members who prefer to buy pedigreed pets to adopt a shelter aspin or puspin instead of patronizing petshops and breeders.
- sign up as a PAWS FOSTER PARENT for a shelter dog or cat if you live within Metro Manila - living in a foster home that can temporarily care for them helps our rescues become rehabilitated and helps us help more animals. The required 8-hour per month of volunteer work is also automatically considered completed for a volunteer who fosters an animal from the shelter. - see FAQ on fostering
- Politely talk to a neighbor who neglects his pets to improve care and living conditions (ex. if neighbor doesn't give enough food, water, proper housing, is caged or tied all day, pets have untreated illness, skin conditions, etc.) - see FAQ on pet neglect
- When you see an injured stray animal, take it to the nearest clinic for medical attention and temporarily care for it or find someone who can. PAWS offers vet assistance to rescues if the reporter offers to foster or finds a fosterer. - see FAQ on stray/rescue emergencies / abandoned dogs and fostering
- When you encounter animal cruelty, report to the police. If you choose to report to an NGO like PAWS, make sure that before you call or email, you have all the info needed and make sure you're willing to execute a witness affidavit. NOTE: We do not entertain anonymous reports. - see FAQ on reporting animal cruelty and cruelty: online photos/videos
- Familiarize yourself with PAWS' campaigns, programs, policies and FAQS found in the PAWS website.
- Be a SUPPORTING MEMBER / Donate in cash or in kind. You can even collect donations from friends and family. - see FAQ on donating
- Take the initiative, educate, enlighten, encourage, intervene.
A PAWS volunteer is expected to be resourceful, informed, empowered and proactive. :)

I CAN'T MAKE IT TO THE VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION,
CAN I STILL VOLUNTEER?
FOSTER
Question:
Answer:
Volunteer Orientation schedules are posted in the PAWS Facebook. You may start volunteering already at the shelter even if you haven't attended a Volunteer Orientation as long as you have submitted your duly signed volunteer application form, and acquired pre-exposure Rabies and Tetanus Vaccination (please provide us with a copy of your vaccination card).
You can get your vaccinations at your local health office or at a clinic that has the vaccines. (PAWS, unfortunately, cannot subsidize volunteers' vaccinations so you'll have to get it on your own).
Those who do not have pre-exposure shots will not be able to render volunteer work directly with the animals, but you can help with other important shelter work such as admin-related tasks and cleaning.
Please note that your volunteer activities may be limited until you have attended an orientation. Please attend the orientation once it has been announced.
Volunteer orientations are held once every quarter, always on a Saturday.
Volunteers are required to render 8 hours of volunteer work per month.
If a volunteer fosters a shelter animal, the volunteer hours are considered fulfilled.
- I would like to help but have not yet attended a volunteer orientation. Can I already start volunteering at the shelter?
- I cannot attend the upcoming volunteer orientation, when/how can I volunteer?

CAN KIDS ALSO VOLUNTEER FOR PAWS?
PAWS welcomes volunteers of all ages. Kids and teenagers below 15 years old must have a parent/guardian's consent.
Please fill up the Volunteer Application Form and have your mom/dad or guardian sign it before bringing it to the PAWS Shelter (also known as PARC).
For further questions, please call tel. # 475-1688 during PAWS Office Hours (Mondays to Saturdays, 10am-5pm except holidays) or email [email protected]
Pictured in photo: Three of PAWS' amazing kid volunteers were featured on the Animal Chronicles (DZRJ 810Khz, Mondays at 8pm ) last Sept. 12, 2011.
Anton Cabalza, 13, spends time with shelter cats and does his own humane education for kids his age in his school, giving pointers on proper care for pets and why kids should be kind to animals.
Tasha Santos, 12, has clocked in the most number of hours of volunteer work for kids, inside the shelter and outside - doing ocular inspections of adoption applicants' houses with her mom, Sarah.
Riel Tanaliga, 9, is the youngest and our most promising active shelter volunteer. She loves working with our shelter dogs.
