Q: How much will it cost to organize a Spay/Neuter Outreach in our area/province/city? What do we need to do?
For PAWS to be able to conduct a spay/neuter outreach in a province/city/neighborhood, there would need to be someone (an individual, a company, a group, or the LGU) who can sponsor the outreach.
The sponsorship covers the cost of drugs and medical supplies and assurance of free fuel (or airfare for the vet team and the roro fare of the mobile clinic if applicable) and the PAWS team's meals and lodging (if out-of-town and calls for team to spend the night)- dormitory-type lodging will do as long as the female team members have a separate toilet and bath. PAWS for its part absorbs the cost of closing down our low-cost clinic for the duration of the outreach, professional vet fees (for vets on board other than our shelter vet, so we can cater to more patients) and other miscellaneous/contingency expenses. It would be safe to assume a minimum of P30,000 for the drugs and supplies to spay/neuter 30-35 patients, whether cat or dog,
Out-of-town spay/neuter outreach activities are scheduled at least a month ahead because we need to commission a private vet part-time to attend to the medical needs of our shelter animals (around 300 of them), also to advise our clinic clients so patients' treatment regimen is not compromised and volunteers may file their work leave. Since we usually bring 2 of our 3 caretakers, we also need to coordinate volunteer schedules so they can come to help the lone caretaker left behind with feeding and cleaning chores.
For SN outreach, the organizing contact must be able to assure us of the following:
1. secure ample-spaced, well-ventilated, roofed venue with easy access to running water and electricity morning to evening
---- it must be able to accommodate the PAWS mobile spay/neuter clinic, registration/waiting area for owners and their pets where we can also conduct our free humane education seminar, a post-operation recovery area for the patients (Gyms or basketball courts near the barangay hall can be a suitable venue BUT there must be no games, practices or any other activities scheduled the whole day until evening. If barangay halls are spacious enough, this is also a possible venue. If we need to bring more than one vet to perform surgery, we would need just 1 small air-conditioned room to serve as 2nd surgery room)
2. provide the full name and contact details of the barangay head and their support for the outreach
--- even if they are not willing to shoulder the cost, we need the LGU/barangay to be willing to disseminate information to the community about the upcoming spay/neuter outreach and we also need their local logistics support (like local coordination, crowd control and security when necessary)
3. perform information dissemination in the community at least a week ahead up to the day of the outreach
--- so that residents know of the free kapon, when and where it will be held and what they need to do to prepare their pets (ie, pets must not be fed on the morning of the surgery day). The barangay head may instruct "recorida" rounds and have their tanods post and distribute our flyers.
4. since the outreach must be worth our time, travel and effort, we strive to serve at least 30 patients (be it cat or dog) per day per 1 surgery vet
Please let us know if you would be able to secure such arrangements for this project. Do not hesitate to email us for further clarifications.
