ASSISTANCE FOR LOST/MISSING PETS
IF YOUR PET IS MISSING:
In the meantime, we advise pet owners do the ff:
- PAWS assists by making the announcement in the PAWS Facebook so that those who may see the lost pet can contact the pet owner.
- For those who would like to post their lost pets' photos in the PAWS Facebook, kindly email photo to [email protected] CC: [email protected] with details and other pertinent information, SUBJECT: LOST PET.
Note: We try to reply to emails and post photos of lost pets as quickly as we can but due to the demands of the PAWS advocacy as well as other responsibilities, it may not be as soon as warranted.
In the meantime, we advise pet owners do the ff:
- Check the pound immediately. Your barangay might have a neighborhood pound so check here first. The city pound is under the City Vet and City Health Office of the city. PAWS does not have a van that goes around collecting strays and/or rescues. If your dog or cat was loose on the streets, he/she may have been picked up by dog catchers authorized by your barangay or by the city pound through RA9482: The Anti Rabies Act. Note that city pounds have varied holding periods for impounded animals - if unclaimed or not adopted, they are supposed to be humanely euthanized. There is a fine to claim your pet, but that is much better than losing your pet all together.
- Canvas your neighborhood, go door-to-door and talk to people in the vicinity where your pet was last seen.
- Post flyers with your pet's current photos and your contact information in nearby shops, vet clinics, barangay halls, etc. Distribute it among all neighbors, have it posted in the barangay halls, subdivision gates, etc.
- Post your lost pet's flyer online in your personal blogs and other social networks.
- If you suspect your pet has been stolen, report this to the police/barangay immediately. Be prepared to provide info about where your pet was last seen and other pertinent details.
TIPS TO PREVENT YOUR PET FROM GETTING LOST
The number of LOST PETS is alarming. Friends, be extra vigilant with your pets. Some tips:
- SPAY/NEUTER your pets so that they don't wander off or escape from your home looking for a mate. Most cases reported to PAWS of Lost Pets and pets who have been run-over are intact (not spayed/neutered) pets.
Spaying/neutering our pets not only helps curb the pet overpopulation problem, there are health benefits and it reduces their tendency to run out of the home to find a mate, especially when she is in heat (for female pets) or when he (male pets) smell a female in heat in the neighborhood. (See: Man Up & Neuter / Spay is the new sexy) - When in public places (i.e, the mall, walking on your street/village, the vet clinic, etc), always make sure your pet is wearing a collar attached to a leash to keep them safe from harm and to keep them from hurting or scaring others. Also make sure you are holding on to the leash. This is also required by RA9482: The Anti Rabies Act of 2007.
RA9482: The Anti Rabies Act of 2007
Sec. 5. Responsibilities of Pet Owner. - All Pet Owners shall be required to:
(c) Maintain control over their Dog and not allow it to roam the streets or any Public Place without a leash.
- Make sure you keep your pets indoors or in your home/yard/lot that is properly fenced to prevent your pets from running out of your home and being injured by vehicles or picked up by dogcatchers or dog meat traders. This is also prevents them from being exposed to cruel people out on the streets.
- Don't leave your pet unattended inside the car. Aside from health risks to your pet, this can invite thieves to steal your pet and/or your car.
- Don't leave your pet tied outside a store or restaurant unattended.
- Get your pet microchipped and consider providing a pet tag hanging on your pet's collar. If your pet gets lost, this lets good samaritans know who to contact if your pet is found. The microchip is also one way of proving that you own that particular animal.
--- How helpful is a microchip?? Last May 2013, a husky ran out from his home in a posh Makati village and traversed through EDSA until he reached Ortigas. He was reunited with his owner 10 hours later because he was identified to have a microchip - even if his owner did not have any recent photos to show to prove ownership, the owner was able to provide the microchip info that matched the microchip found on the husky when he was scanned.
Related Info: Microchipping
A microchip implant is an identifying integrated circuit placed under the skin of a dog, cat, horse or other animal by a licensed veterinarian. The chip, about the size of a large grain of rice, uses passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology.
Microchips can be used by vet clinics, rescue groups, kennels, trainers, and registeries to identify the animals (note: FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES and to show proof of ownership, not tracking purposes).
Microchips are also useful to return lost pets quickly to their owners.
Microchipping Procedure:
A microchip is preferred over a tattoo for identification purposes because sedation is required in order to tattoo the animal, and the tattoo can fade or become unreadable in time since it is on the skin.
Some vet clinics we are aware of that offer microchip (listed in alphabetical order):

Microchips are also useful to return lost pets quickly to their owners.
Microchipping Procedure:
- After checking that the animal does not already have a chip, the vet injects the chip with a syringe and records the chip's unique ID. No anesthetic is required. A test scan ensures correct operation. An enrollment form is completed with the chip ID, owner contact information, pet name and description, shelter and/or veterinarian contact information, and an alternate emergency contact designated by the pet owner. The form is sent to a registry, who may be the chip manufacturer, distributor or an independent entity; some countries have a single official national database.
- The owner receives a registration certificate with the chip ID and recovery service contact information. The information can also be imprinted on a collar tag worn by the animal. Like a car title, the certificate serves as proof of ownership and is transferred with the animal to the new owner.
